What is VAT exemption?

VAT exemption refers to the government tax relief scheme that allows people with a disability or long-term medical condition to purchase emergency alarm systems without paying VAT.

Who can qualify for VAT exemption?

You may be eligible if you are chronically sick or disabled. You do not need to be registered disabled or receiving other benefits to qualify.

You’re considered chronically sick or disabled if

  • You have a physical or mental impairment that has a long-term and substantial adverse effect on your ability to carry out everyday activities
  • You have a condition the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness (a long-term health condition)

What are the exceptions?

You are not eligible for VAT relief if your condition is temporary (such as a broken leg) or if you are elderly without a chronic condition.
